Omicron variant.

A must read.

A new variant of Coronavirus christened as Omicron is spreading across
the world. It was first detected in South Africa. But as it is natural for a
virus to mutate, it is not possible to pinpoint its origin as this virus has
been detected in Belgium too which has not had anyone visit from South
Africa. I believe it is the fourth variant post Alpha, Beta and Delta. The
scientists are yet to establish its behaviour pattern like its transmission
ability and virulence or severity. The virus has been detected in Australia,
the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Britain, Israel, Hongkong, Botswana,
Belgium,  Switzerland and Canada. The World Health Organization has
declared it as a variant of concern. Worse it is reinfecting double jabbed
people. This has raised questions on the efficacy of the present vaccines.
This phenomenon has shone light on vaccine equality as many countries
have been blamed of hoarding more vaccines than required where many
African countries have not been able to provide even a single dose to its
citizens. ‘ No one is safe, till everyone is. ‘ There is a debate raging that
countries should donate excess vaccines to COVAX( a global initiative for
speeding up the development, manufacture and equitable distribution of
new vaccines.) before considering giving the 3rd dose or remaining as the
booster dose to its citizens.
It is early days to know its exact behaviour pattern as scientists are working
on it. However, wherever in the world get vaccinated asap, follow the standard
protocols of masking, using hand sanitizers and avoiding crowds. Stay safe
and be responsible fellows. We are not through with the pandemic as of now.
